Gencon 2002 !The Safehouse, a VERY unique restaurant and bar.
These pics were taken at the Safehouse. I went there both friday night, and
saturday night. Admittedly, I closed the place on friday night. Though I'm
not necessarily a bar type, I found this place VERY cool, and thought I'd
share the pics with you.
The entry. I'm sworn to secrecy as to its exact location, but, the bar and
eatery is located in an alley, and has NO mention of anything to do with he Safehouse. The pic on the left
is what you see when you DO find the place. The pic on the right, is the main entry room, where you had better
know the password...
Well, this bloke didn't know the password. If you don't know the password, the door security will have to make sure you're
at the right place. They do this by making you do something 'unusual'. This guy had to wear fairy wings, and prance and caper.
He got off easy, IMO :) The pic on the right, is the lady who was in charge of club security for the evening. It
is she who decides what one must do when they do not know the password. Once you either give the password,
or prove you should enter, a button on this desk is pressed, and a secret panel opens up to allow you access.
These pics are both what one sees after getting past security, immediately upon entering the place. Then entire
place has a spy/007/espionage theme about it. I wonder if I got to see ALL of the rooms...
Yet another of the many rooms in the place. Most of the rooms are small, allowing for continuity of the overall
theme. On the right, is Scottie, the Manager, and very nice guy. And a very busy guy.
You never know who you'll run into... On the left, is Andrew Thompson, Jim Govreau, Hal Greenberg, and Doug Herring.
On the right, is te infamous payphone exit. You put your quarter in, and punch in a code, and the wall of the phonebooth
lets you out.
Two of the eating areas in the Safehouse. One thing, if you haven't seen already, is that there something to look at
EVERYWHERE. On MY second night, I saw things I missed the first.
Yet a couple more of the dining rooms.
On the left is the 'Mascot'. I was told by several staff members to get a picture of the 'Mascot'. I did so, and didn't ask
any questions :) On the right, is one of the staff, with a familiar poster on the wall. These were everywhere in the bar,
and similar ones were all over downtown Milwaukee.
On the left, is a huge machine gun donated by John Wayne. Sorry, it was just interesting :) On the right, is the dance floor.
The dance floor has tables on it until a certain time, then the DJ starts playing music, the floor is cleared, and Milwaukee starts
partying in full mode.
The upstairs. There are a couple of upstairs spots. It takes you a bit to find them though.
Yet another of the rooms on the left, and another one of the many bars on the right. Most of the rooms have a
monitor where you can watch those in the entry who do NOT know the secret password to get in. Theres one
just inside the main entrance, and everyone cheers the hapless individual who may have had to cluck like a chicken to get in.
Even the bathroom area has fun stuff. I'm told that in the ladies room, theres a nude pic of Burt Reynolds,
with a moveable fig leaf over his, uhh, well, where do fig leaves go? Anyways, when a female happens to peek under the fig leaf, a red siren goes off
in one of the nearby rooms, thus letting everyone know that 'someone' was looking at Burt. On the right, we have
Ken Coleman standing in green shirt, with Jeff Quinn also standing, black shirt. Standing to the right of Jeff Quinn
is Chris Johanson of Twin Rose Software, and standing in front of Chris is Dee Peterson, Chris's partner and Twin Rose's web master.
Standing right foreground, hand on stomach, is Scott Purdy. Andrew Troman is
standing between Scott, and Chris. Seated, from left to right, is Hal Greenberg, Doug Herring, Jim Govreau, and
Andrew Thompson.
On my way back to my hotel, I ran into Jim Fallone, of Osseum Entertainment. Behind him is the Velvet Room, yet another
bar in town. He was about to attend a meeting in the Velvet Room, so i snapped this pic, and went to bed.
Many thanks to the wonderful Staff at the Safehouse. You guys rock. General Manager Brian, Manager Scottie, and all the staff. I can tell you
the servers work hard, harder than most in other establishments. The place is so crowded, that they must plow their
own trail to bring the fine eats and drinks to the patrons. I got run down several times myself. Serves me right for being in the way.
You guys have a most excellent place, and my one regret, is that I'll not get to go there next Gen Con.
